March 2005: Farewell to Jock Campbell

Jock Campbell the Chairperson of the Trust sadly passed away this month, and he will be sadly missed. Jock was a man of vision and he was greatly involved with the initial plans to buy and renovate Sandhaven Harbour. He was ‘well kent’ and respected by many and it was his influence, enthusiasm and sense of humour which guided the establishment of the Trust and its initial steps toward its goal.

Many will remember Jock as the swimming teacher at Fraserburgh Academy but he was also a distinguished soldier.

His position as Chairperson will be taken by Keith Gregory who has served as Deputy Chairperson for some time.

April 2005: Gearing up for the new season

With the new season appearing on the horizon much preparatory work is being done to ensure that the progress at Sandhaven Harbour continues. Safety ladders have now been erected at the harbour, and it is hoped that new safety signs, and a noticeboard will be erected in the near future. New grants have been applied for and we await results from them.

July 2005: Harbour Rock and James swims from the Broch

The Trust was pleased to host a mini Harbour Day with outdoor music, a bouncy castle, barbeque, and stalls. The highlight of the afternoon was a sponsored sea swim by local man James Masson, who bravely swam from the outskirts of Fraserburgh to Sandhaven Harbour to raise funds for the Trust.

July 2005: Pontoons at Sandhaven Harbour

With the help of Aberdeenshire Council and a grant from Awards for All the Trust are now owners of a pontoon system worth £20,000.

The 250 bright blue plastic blocks were assembled by a team of volunteers who laboured in the sun for several hours. “It’s like Lego for adults” said one person. It is hoped that the new system will be fully in use during the 2006/2007 season.

Pontoons will prove to be a great asset to the harbour by allowing safer access to boats, a working area, and convenient berthing for local and visiting boats alike.

Volunteers labour to offload and stack the pontoon blocks.
Each block needed to have its internal pressure equalised by opening and closing a valve.
Young and old were involved in the assembly of the pontoons.
After the pontoons were assembled they were towed out into the East Harbour.
Workers watch the pontoons being moored temporarily in the East Harbour.

September 2005: Beach Clean

Despite poor weather conditions a good number of local residents turned out for the Beach Clean organised by the Trust with the help of the Moray Firth Partnership Beach Guardians.

Some of the large amount of rubbish picked up around the Harbour and beach.
Despite the heavy rain everyone enjoyed the morning
It was really encouraging to see families turn up to work together.
